The Act of Killing

One of the most surreal and disturbing films I have ever seen, all the more so for the fact it is a documentary.  The film maker, Joshua Oppenheimer, challenges a group of political mass murderers to retell the absolute violence of their acts as if they were making their own film dramatisation of them.  The film documents this process and the reflections of the Preemen (Freemen/gangsters) as they explore their history, contrasting the public positivity for the men with the dark undercurrent that what is being explored is the brutal ending of thousands of human lives that are often referred as humane exterminations.  The disturbing backdrop of musical numbers and fantastical costume changes only adds to the darkness through their seemingly light heartedness:
